The Challenge
Some coaching projects are complex — and full of opportunity. One of my most challenging yet rewarding experiences was Breaking Barriers Together with an extraordinary client: a blind man in a wheelchair with a doctoral degree in law, whose dream was to work at the Federal Office of Justice (BfJ) in Bonn.
This wasn’t just about career advice. Breaking Barriers Together meant designing a strategy that addressed both visible and invisible challenges — from accessibility needs to the self-doubt that often comes after years of being underestimated.
The Situation
I co-coached him with a colleague. His intellect was razor-sharp, his knowledge deep — but the obstacles were real:
Blindness and mobility limitations
Living in Hamburg while the dream role was in Bonn
Struggling with active listening, using humor to mask uncertainty
We knew from the start that Breaking Barriers Together would require creativity, persistence, and the courage to reframe every obstacle as an opportunity.
The Approach for Breaking Barriers Together
I went all in on learning about inclusion and partnered closely with an inclusion manager. We didn’t just polish his résumé — we tackled every barrier standing in his way. Breaking Barriers Together meant addressing not only the visible challenges but also the subtle, often invisible ones that can hold talented professionals back.
We started by mapping his journey — understanding his ambitions, his past experiences, and the unique value he could bring to any organization. Every conversation, every strategy session was a step toward Breaking Barriers Together, ensuring that we focused on possibility rather than limitation.
Strength-Based Competency Profiling
We built a crystal-clear profile of his strengths — professional and personal — to position him as a high-value candidate. This was more than paperwork; it was about Breaking Barriers Together by helping him see his own value as clearly as we did. We reframed his narrative from “limitations” to “distinct advantages,” highlighting his adaptability, problem-solving skills, and determination. This profile became the foundation for every job application and interview preparation session.
Targeted Job Search
With his dream job in sight, we ran a focused search — staying strategic and maintaining momentum. We networked with the right people, leveraged inclusion initiatives, and kept every step aligned with our ultimate goal. In the spirit of Breaking Barriers Together, we sought out organizations that valued diversity and inclusion, ensuring he wouldn’t just land a job, but the right job — one where he could thrive.
Communication Reframing
We practiced active listening, role-played interviews, and transformed humor-as-defense into authentic confidence. This stage was crucial for Breaking Barriers Together — because success isn’t only about skill, it’s about presence. We worked on clear, confident storytelling that allowed him to present himself with authority, without losing authenticity.
Relocation Support
We even mapped the logistics of moving his family from Hamburg to Bonn, removing friction at every step. For us, Breaking Barriers Together also meant taking care of the human side of change. We anticipated potential challenges — from housing to community integration — so that once he started his role, he could focus entirely on excelling at his work.
The Result
After six months of focused coaching — five hours a week — he landed the job. Not just any job — the exact position at the Federal Office of Justice he’d dreamed of. Colleagues called it “impossible.” We proved otherwise. Breaking Barriers Together turned a dream into reality, showing that when strategy meets empathy, even the toughest obstacles can be overcome.
What I Learned
Breaking Barriers Together isn’t about charity — it’s about strategy. It’s the powerful combination of expertise, empathy, and collaboration that transforms what seems impossible into reality. It’s seeing potential where others see limitation, and creating pathways where none existed before.
Through this experience, I learned that Breaking Barriers Together means challenging assumptions — both our own and those of the systems we navigate. It’s about asking the right questions, building trust, and making sure every voice is heard and valued.
It also reinforced that sustainable success doesn’t come from working in isolation. Breaking Barriers Together is about partnership — leveraging different strengths, sharing knowledge, and celebrating each milestone along the way. Success is no longer an individual win; it becomes a collective achievement that inspires others to aim higher.
Most importantly, I realized that Breaking Barriers Together is not a one-time act but an ongoing commitment to inclusion, equity, and opportunity. It’s a reminder that the most meaningful victories are the ones we share — and that when we lift each other up, we all rise.
